Services
Translation
I specialise in French and Spanish to English translation and I also have a good working knowledge of Italian and Portuguese.
I have lived in France and visited Spain and Italy extensively. I work on a regular basis for agencies based all around the world in addition to the UK, where I live currently. My rates are reasonable (around 0.07 euros per word), slightly more for rush jobs and for very tight deadlines. I meet such tight deadlines and am prepared to work unsociable hours, including weekends, where required.
The subjects I cover are wide ranging and include law (both criminal and civil), medical, accountancy, banking, pharmaceutical, general commercial, architecture, construction, the political sciences, history (specifically that relating to the French Resistance Movement and the life of General de Gaulle) and literary. In the mid 1980s, I worked as secretary to the President of the French Overseas Residents Organisation, who was also the President of the Free French Association in the UK.
I am a Member of the Institute of Linguists, an Associate Member of the Institute of Translators and Interpreters and I am recognised by the Home Office.
I hold various diplomas and certificates from the Institute of Linguists, Royal Society of Arts, London Chamber of Commerce and what was formerly known as Bristol Polytechnic. I have studied further at both Westminster and Reading Universities.
I worked in the City of London for many years in environments including stock broking, securities houses, metal broking – whose companies were mainly headquartered in Paris and Geneva – and property development. Some of this work brought me into close touch with Central Government.
I completed a six month assignment at Oxford University in 2002 where, amongst other duties, I assisted in the compilation of a document to be presented to the French Government by a senior academic on social issues, mainly in the area of pensions. In addition to this I have worked in the public sector for entities such as hospitals, courts and police forces. My clients have included the French Home Office and the Spanish Chamber of Commerce amongst other both large and small commercial, industrial and professional organisations/associations.
Interpreting
My interpreting language combinations are French, Spanish, and English.
I underwent an intensive course in consecutive/conference interpreting in 1990 at the Polytechnic of Central London (now known as Westminster University). Here I was trained by an EU interpreter. Since then I have regularly interpreted from and into French/Spanish/English at private venues/meetings/courts/conferences/exhibitions/on behalf of police forces and at hospitals. My charges vary from £150 to £220 per day, depending on the client and market rates. I am prepared to travel.
Tutoring
I have been privately tutoring French and Spanish, mainly on a one-to-one basis, since 1991. My clients have been mainly GCSE, A level, university students and adult beginners. For this, I charge £20 per hour.
